Luis de la Fuente insists Gavi’s injury was an accident, despite the Spain coach being criticise for calling it an avoidable situation.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has admitt he is frustrate by criticism of his role in Pablo Martín Paez Gavira Gavi’s torn ACL that will keep him out for a year, insisting the injury was accidental.

Gavi suffered a serious injury while playing for Spain against Georgia in November last year, which many believed was avoidable as Spain had already qualified for Euro 2024 and there was no need for him to play. De la Fuente faced criticism for his decision, but the Spain boss insisted the injury was accidental.

‘No, I have explained this before, but I am not happy that people take advantage of a situation that has proven to be an accident, which is the same as what happened with the injuries of Rodrygo, Carvajal or Ter Steden now.’
